These terms cover your use of the FairShare app and website. Using FairShare means you accept them.
The short version. FairShare is a free bookkeeping tool for splitting costs between people who already trust each other. It records what you tell it — it does not hold your money, move it, or decide who owes what. Debts between you and your friends are between you and your friends.
FairShare records shared expenses and calculates balances from what its users enter. It is a calculator and a shared ledger. It is not a bank, a payment processor, a money transmitter, an escrow service, or a provider of financial, tax, or legal advice.
This is the most important term here. A balance shown in FairShare is a record of what its users typed in — nothing more. FairShare is not a party to any debt, does not guarantee that a balance is accurate, and has no power to enforce, collect, cancel, or arbitrate one. If someone doesn't pay you back, that's a matter between the two of you.
Marking a debt as settled only changes a record in the app. It is not proof that money moved.
FairShare can start a PayPal payment for a settlement. If you use it:
Expense descriptions, notes, comments, and receipt images stay yours. You grant us only the permission needed to run the service: to store your content, and to display it to the people you share a group or expense with.
Don't upload anything unlawful, anything you don't have the right to share, or anyone else's personal information without a good reason to.
Adding someone to a group lets them see that group's expenses, splits, comments, receipts, and the names and email addresses of other members. Add people deliberately. Removing someone stops future access but doesn't unsee what they've already seen.

FairShare is provided free of charge and without any uptime guarantee. Features may change or be withdrawn. We'll give reasonable notice before discontinuing the service entirely, and enough time to export your data.
Delete your account whenever you like, from Profile → Privacy & Security in the app, or Profile on the web. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what deletion removes and what necessarily remains on other people's records.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or where required by law. Where it's reasonable to do so, we'll tell you first.
FairShare is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any balance or calculation it shows is correct. Check the numbers before you rely on them.
To the fullest extent the law allows, FairShare and its author are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, for lost profits, or for any money you fail to recover from another person. Our total liability arising from your use of FairShare will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the previous 12 months (which for a free service is zero) or USD 50.
Some jurisdictions don't allow these limits, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for fraud.
If your misuse of FairShare or your content causes a third-party claim against us, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of dealing with it.
If you installed FairShare from the Apple App Store or Google Play, that store's terms also apply. Apple and Google are not parties to these terms and have no obligation to provide support for FairShare; Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries entitled to enforce these terms against you.
We may update these terms. The date at the top will change, and material changes will be announced in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use FairShare afterwards means you accept the new terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protections of the mandatory law of your country of residence.
